Genealogy of Joannes Georgius Cornelius

Mike Korneli

I am trying to find records for Jos. or Georg Corneli who emigrated from Brabanty auf Beuelo. That is from a birth record of his daughter in 1705. There is also a church record of Jos. Corneli from 1673. I do not know when he emigrated to Klotten Germany(Prussia). I cannot find a village spelled that way. I did find Beokelo. I have not been able to find emigration records. I have found several possibilities of a match based on dates through My Heritage, but cannot verify anything. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hello Mike,

You don't find the place Beokelo.

    I think maybe Boekel

Hi Mike, - Have you seen the original record of the baptism of their daughter Anna on 8 November 1705 in Klotten?
If so: Do you have a link to or a copy of this baptism register that we can read somewhere?
In the Family Search index, the father's name in 1705 is listed as Georg Cornelius Brabantg.
For the baptisms of son Cornelius (1707) and daughter Margaretha (1709), only Georg Cornelius or Joannes Georgius Cornelius is listed in de FS index. Where did you find the name in 1673? Can you pls. indicate a source.

If the index in FS is to be believed (note: the index is man-made and may contain errors, especially when the handwriting was not clear or a transcriber was not quite familiar with 'foreign' names), well....he is listed in this FS index as being from “Beuel” in 1731 (at his death?). To me, 'Beuel' sounds more like "Budel" (also located in Brabant and pronounced as 'Buul' in local dialect, which may be more plausible than Boekel? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budel (opent in een nieuw tabblad)

In the 17th and 18th centuries, peddlers and other craftsmen travelled from Budel and surrounding places in the wider region to other parts of Europe, including Germany. They were the so-called “Teuten”. They were the travelling traders and craftsmen (coppersmiths etc.) from this region who travelled during the warmer months with their wares between 17th to the early 20th century. Their trading area could cover as far away as the north of Germany towards the Pfalz (between Bremen, Hannover, Stuttgart...and further). In the winter months they often went back to their villages (..or they married abroad (or not?) and stayed in these area where they started a family...

But again: without having seen the original, I dare not say which place might be meant... although Budel seems to me to be a potential candidate. In the early 18th century, Brabant largely covered the current Belgian provinces of Flemish Brabant, Walloon Brabant, Antwerp and the Brussels-Capital Region, as well as the vast majority of the present-day Dutch province of North Brabant.

On this site you will find some “Teuten” families from Budel. It is possible that not all names have been found yet?

    Anno 1663
25 ianuarij ininerunt matrimonium in faciae ecclesiae Henricus Cornelis et Maria Crusberchs presentibus Adriano Convents et Ioannae Gossens

    Anno 1709
27 Januarij obiit Henricus Cornelis omnibus sacramentis munitus

    -----------------------------------------------
Not sure if Mike reads Dutch..., but fyi:
Given that the godfather, Caspar Fahn, was also listed as “ex Beuelo itidem brabantus”,...you start to think that we may be dealing with “Teuten” who, as a group, travelled from the same village to the same region with their wares and their knowledge. They supported each other and were often godparents to each other's children. Beverlo also knew “Teuten”... it could be possible.. Perhaps the Beverlo Local History Society has more information? In their magazine [ March 1991 no. 3], there was once an article about the Teuten from Beverlo.

Cornelius, gedoopt 22 april 1707 in Klotten

  • Michiel19 sep 2025, 04:17

    - doop 15 februari 1705, vader Peter Bergmann brabantus, doopgetuige o.a. Joannes Jacobs ex Bergeyck im hertzogenbusch
    - doop 22 april 1707 Cornelius kind van Joannes Georgius Cornelius en Maria Gertrudis, doopgetuigen Cornelius Huben ex Cocheme en Gertrudis Schadens ex Clotten
    - doop 12 oktober 1707 vader Hubertus Gerhardt x Margaretha Sauben
    - doop 6 augustus 1714, kind Catharina (?)

    – Taufe 15. Januar 1705, Vater Hubertus Gerhardts, ex Brabantia
    – Taufe 15. Februar 1705, Vater Peter Bergmann, Brabantus, Taufzeuge u. a. Joannes Jacobs, ex Bergeyck im Hertzogenbusch
    – Taufe 22. April 1707, Cornelius, Kind von Joannes Georgius Cornelius und Maria Gertrudis, Taufzeugen Cornelius Huben, ex Cocheme, und Gertrudis Schadens, ex Clotten
    – Taufe 12. Oktober 1707, Vater Hubertus Gerhardt x Margaretha Sauben
    – Taufe 13. September 1708, Kind Joannes Theodorus, des Ehepaars Petrus Bergmans und Maria Catharina Bergmans dicta Fettin
    - Taufe 1.

  • Helena19 sep 2025, 07:38

Mike, - [ do you speak German or English?] .... not sure if you heard about 'Teuten' (the peddlars) before? Peddlars traded in all sorts of things: from coppersmith work, to medicines and herbs, textiles, trading in womens' hair (during the wig-period) etc. This trading was done in the spring- and summer months. In wintertime they returned - in general- to their home villages...unless they settled 'abroad'. In some villages in this Brabant- region (and indeed some places in the Limburg area), up to half of the population was involved in this type of trade.

Thank you to everyone who has responded. There is a lot of potential information. The information I have is copies of the church records from Klotten. I also have some information from the Klotten Family Book. The 1673 reference is when Jos. Corneli was a baptismal sponsor. I did find possible matches from the Boekel region and Budel. I need more accurate proof. I was thinking it was possible Jos. Corneli came to Klotten and later his son Joannes Georgius came and stayed. I have all 3 baptismal records of his children. It does state he was married in Klotten. The idea of a Teuten might make sense. I will try some of the suggested sites. I struggle to navigate them. Usually I can get an english translation which helps
We are traveling to Germany next year and my hope is to find and visit my ancestors village in Brabant. Thank you again to everyone. I am surprised at the responses and very grateful

  • Helena22 sep 2025, 02:14

Indeed Mike, - accurate evidence is what counts. One can't guess...
However, at some point in the late 17th or early 18th century, it is often not possible to find anything because registers are missing or because nothing was recorded about our ancestors. Perhaps the marriage registers of Klotten are missing? Otherwise, there might be more information in them?

It will not be easy to find the ancestors without knowing exactly which place [in Brabant?] is meant.

If with certainty we are dealing with 'teuten', then you do not need to look in Boekel. They were not known in this village.
The origins and places of residence of the ‘teuten’ [singular: a ‘teut’] in Brabant should mainly be sought in what we know in Dutch as ‘De Kempen’.
De Kempen, in English >> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campine (opent in een nieuw tabblad) Border area of present-day Dutch and Belgian provinces of Brabant.
And in places in the current Dutch province of Limburg, more specific around Weert, Nederweert, Roggel, Thorn and overlapping in the Belgian province of Limburg around Overpelt, Hamont-Achel etc.

For centuries, the ‘teuten’ travelled long distances to earn a living with their wares, their trade and skills. It was usually out of sheer necessity that people started trading [the soils were poor], but over time, these itinerant 'teuten' often ended up with more possessions than those who stayed behind. The ‘teuten’ became - generally speaking- the wealthier families in their villages.

At an unrelated baptism, a godparent – Joannes Jacobs from Bergeijk - was noted in 1705 in Klotten (see Michiel's contributions). One might think that they knew each other from earlier times in the village or nearby area in the Netherlands? Bergmans / Berchmans is a known name in the Kempen area.

Since ‘Brabant’ is mentioned, try searching in places in the wider Kempen area and possibly overlapping somewhat in Belgian province of Limburg.
    Budel (Buul in dialect)
    Bergeijk (Bergaaik in dialect)
    Borkel (Börrukel in dialect)
    Bocholt (Bogget in dialect)
Beverlo (Bejevel of Bjaevel in dialect?)

Perhaps you can find another clue in the Klotten Family Book or in the Klotten magistrate’s protocols.

I should have answers your question earlier. I am from the U.S. so I speak English. I had 3 years of German when I was in school many many years ago. I am trying to learn Germany again online, not easy at 71 years old. We will be returning to Germany next year and am hoping I can converse at least a little with our German friends. I now think Budel will be on our list to visit.
I have been doing a little research and Kempen did come up. I also looked at the pages that I copied from the Klotten Church records. Peter Bergman was in the records as coming from Brabanty. I will try and find other connections from the Klotten family book. I was told 11 people emigrated from Brabant. I have been searching on My Heritage in the Brabant region. There are very many Cornelius,Cornelis, Corneli, Cornely, and a few other spelling ; of people from the region. There are several possibilities. There however is only one Joannes Gerorgius Cornelius from Budel. He was born in 1675. That date fits if his first child was born in 1705; that would have made him 30 years old. His father Arnoldus was from Budel as was his father Joannes. I will keep trying to look through the sites that you have suggested. I think the other travelers from Brabant certainly gives credibility to the Teuten connection. The pronunciation of Budel as " Buul " makes sense with two documents referencing Beuel and Beuelo as where Joannes Georgius had come from. This information may be as much confirmation that I will find.
On a slightly different topic. I checked my family tree for the name Jacobs. I have a lot of them in my tree. The odd part is, it is not from my fathers side; Korneli, it is from my mothers side. My mothers mother was a Van der Bloemen. Theodore Van der Bloemen was from Horst Limburg, he married Maria Jacobs who was from Helden Limburg. Theodore's father was also from Horst. I have not worked hard on my mother's side of the family tree. It looks like both sides may have originated close to each other. Truely a small world.

  • M.22 sep 2025, 07:48

First of all, my respect for your perseverance and persistence. You refer to a baptism in Budel from 1675. I consulted the index and only found a baptism from June 23, 1675. Perhaps that's what you mean? The parents are Arnoldus Cornelij and Anna Cupers. But the child is only called Joannes, not Joannes Ge(r)orgius...
Returning to the baptismal witness in Klotten from 1705: Caspar Fahns. The name Fahns could be a shortened form of Stephans, Stevens, or Steffens. The name Fahns in the Dutch Republic in the 18th century is very rare.

I've looked further into the baptismal registers of Klotten. In 1695, the baptismal witness Egidius Dederichß is listed as "auß Brabant in Niederverth." This probably refers to Nederweert, which is now in the Dutch province of Limburg. At the time, in the 18th century, it belonged to Austrian Upper Guelders, thus the Austrian Netherlands. It was close to the Brabant border, but was therefore—strictly speaking—not Brabant. I don't think we should stick too strictly to the "Brabantus" description, as I suspect they didn't know it precisely in Klotten either.

See for the baptism entry of 1675: rhc-eindhoven.nl/collectie?mivast=48&mizig=236&miadt=48&miview=ldt&milang=nl&micode=DTB_Budel_10225_8.1&miaet=54 (opent in een nieuw tabblad)

Here are some cursory excerpts from the Klotten Schöffen protokoll. I didn't find George Corneli in it at first glance. It's now almost certain that they were "teuten" (a group of people who worked in a cooperative). Cornelius Huben, who was a witness to George Corneli's baptism in 1707, is likely the same person as Cornelis Hauben, a citizen of the town of Cochem. The name Hauben/Houben suggests a Limburg origin.

  • Michiel22 sep 2025, 19:43

  • Korneli23 sep 2025, 05:37

Michael, you are correct. I did my last post from memory. When I did a My Heritage search for Joannes Georgius Cornelius from Budel I found 4 people from the region. There were many more from Brabant. Two of the people did not fit the date range to be a possibility. There was one Joannes from Reusel. Certainly from the region, not sure if Teutens came from that far west. There was one Joannes Cornelius from Budel. It did not reference Georgius as a middle name. He was the only person that fit the date range and name. Joannes Georgius Cornelius documents state he was from Beuel or Beuelo. Budel is pronounced "Buul"; that would explain why people spelled it the way they did.

Church documents state Peter Bergman was from Brabant. In a My Heritage search it shows Peter Bergman from Brabant, Budel. Budel Teuten records list Bergmann.

I looked at old German handwriting examples. I read the baptismal sponsor as Casper Jahn. The church record again say he was from Beuelo. The Budel Teuten record list Jansen and Janassen. It might be a possibility.

Johann Reinhard Cornely married Ann Maria Clasen. She was born in 1801. I do not have earlier history for her. There were record of Claassen in the Budel Teuten records.

When you look at the records from Joannes from Budel more connections show up. His sister was married to a Jacobs. There are Klotten connections.

Another sister Ida, is listed three times. Obviously, a human error. One time she is listed as Ida De Kees Jan. There is a Petreus Kees listed as a baptismal sponsor in 1673 Klotten church records.

One of Joannes baptismal sponsors is Henricus Bogars. There are several spellings of this name in the Budel Teuten records.

Joannes father Arnoldus has two siblings listed as Henricus D Kees and Cornelius Kees. There are multiple records for Kees in the Budel Teuten records.

The Budel Teuten records also list Cornelissen in their records. None are exact matches unfortunately.

I am still looking for 6 more people who emigrated from Brabant to Klotten. I will try to get them from the Klotten Family Book. The evidence that Joannes Georgius Cornelius from Klotten is the Joannes from Budel is very strong given all the connections. I will keep researching. Thank you for your help. If you find anything else please let me know. As I try to use the sites you suggested I might need some help. Best Regards Mike

Hi, I recommend checking the baptismal records of Cochem and Klotten. I've already made a start, but haven't exhaustively reviewed everything. You can find scans of the church records for Cochem and Klotten at www.archion.de (a one-month subscription is available). Finding a village and a baptismal record that you can't (yet) prove is the person you're looking for seems like a needle in a haystack. It seems more logical to start at the other end of the line, namely in Klotten and Cochem. Perhaps you've heard of the term "Fan Club," coined by Elizabeth Shown Mills, the most famous American genealogist of our time. FAN stands for
    Friends,
    Associates,
    and Neighbors.

It's also called "cluster research," and involves searching in the circles surrounding the person in question—in this case, Georgius Cornelis—to find out who his Friends, Associates, and Neighbors were. For this, the baptismal records and the Protokoll mentioned by Helena (unfortunately only extends to 1705) are an excellent starting point. Then, of course, you have the Klotten Familienbuch. That already provides a network. If you don't get direct clues about where people originated, you could then look at where the surnames appear in the Kempen region and neighboring Limburg. I personally prefer to consult the indexes and associated scans at the Brabant Historical Information Centre (www.bhic.nl), the Regional Historical Centre Eindhoven for the church records of the Kempen region (www.rhc-eindhoven.nl), or the website www.aezel.eu for the church records of Limburg. For example, I saw—but this needs further investigation—that a Nelis Houben appeared in Nederweert in 1691 and in the neighboring municipality of Limburg in 1692. The surname Van Haut/Van Hout is common in Nederweert and Weert (but also very common in Beverlo...).

Good luck with your research and don't let anything discourage you!
