    Hello Helene,

I don't have an account for this archive so I can't access these documents.
Probably other participants of this Forum can access them though.

In general, of you do have links to, or even better scans that are or can be downloaded of old documents, of which you can't read the language and/or old manuscripts of which you can't decipher the writing, you can also post a help request at the forum of 'Wat staat daer' (What is written there). Via the option/button: Start een nieuw onderwerp. If available you can also upload scans.

    With regards,

    Belem

You can download the scan (or make a screenprint) and upload it to watstaatdaer.nl/forum (opent in een nieuw tabblad).

There's a book, "Lezen in Brabantse Bronnen" (in Dutch) that can help learning to read ancient handwriting. For more info see :

    Hi Helene,

First download the page or a part of it to your own device (laptop, tablet, phone, ...)

After clicking the link watstaatdaer.nl/forum (opent in een nieuw tabblad)
Choose: Start een nieuw onderwerp (= start a new topic)
Click the button "Bladeren..." to add the scan.

In the text please provide next to your request also some context for the transcribers, as place, year, nature of the document. Also the link to the original is helpful.

    Mooi Egbert!

  • Helene Berk17 jan 2026, 00:14

thank you so much Egbert -- a good eye!!

I am wondering about the term "doctor" -- google says it was not necessarily used for a medical doctor at that time, but also for a university educated person/teacher. I am curious about the name Vulmarus -- is it a Dutch name, or Spanish origin (which actually fits with Lopes/Lupi..

Once again - thanks for all your help!! j

Indrukwekkend Egbert! Dat doe ik je niet na.

Vulmarus is the Latinization of the name Vulmar (Wulmar, Ulmer).

A guess, given the rare name, place and time: could this be Vulmar Bernaerts?
He was a doctor of philosophy and rector at the University of Leuven in the same era.

So very interesting, and maybe not much of an out-there jump of faith. Honesto's parents were Peiter Lopes de Haro and Catharina van den Berge. (Catherine is identified in a notary document of Honesto (she disinherited him for his political views). His grandfather, participated in protecting the city in 1539-42., in connection with Damiano de Goes, so a link to the University is not too big a stretch.

And Barbara married into the Elsevier family, and younger sister Anna married into Sassenus family -- both publishers in Leiden. (just in case you would like more of the story. )

This has been a great group to post questions too --Thank you again to everyone.
